“And I would like to hear yours as well, but I think that kind of talk is best left for the closing evening hours near a camp fire; I imagine both our tales are long enough for it.” He fumbled inside his duster for his pip boy as he spoke. “As for hearing your story from someone else, can’t say I have; the raiders and mutants didn’t seem too keen on story time, and I haven’t tuned in on any of the radio stations yet.”

He took a second look at the girl’s left arm. “I see you’ve got a pip boy with ya, looks like the 3000 model; seems the similarities keep pouring in now that we’re not pointing guns at each other. I used to have one a lot like yours but I never really like it, it was too bulky, a bit ugly, and it always got in the way. It caught a stray bullet some time ago and it wasn’t really functional from there on out.”

“Heh, good point. I doubt they’d have spoken very highly of me, anyway.” The girl shrugged again at the thought of that strange situation.

“Wait, yours broke?” Her eyes widened a bit in surprise. “That’s odd, the A series is pretty damn durable. It must have been one hell of a shot to break one of these bastards. Mine’s broken my wrist more times than I can count, but it’s never even bugged out.”

The man thought for a bit, trying to remember what else he had encountered thus far. “I think I know the Talon mercs, those guys in the jet black combat armor; Ran into a group of them as they slaughtered a caravan, fucking scum.” He spits in the dirt, as if merely talking about them leaves him with a foul taste in his mouth.

“Oh right, me. Sorry about that, almost forgot what you said.” He chuckled a bit. “So you’re really a vault dweller? I was under the impression that all the vaults had opened at least a hundred years ago, now I’ve seen everything. My name’s Sergio, don’t think it’s my given name but it’s what I go by now; what I can remember will give you a somewhat long story at least.”

“From what I know, our Vault was the last to open. Wasn’t always closed all those years, but they only scouted every once in a while. A few people either got killed or stayed out here, so they closed it as soon as my dad and I showed up.” She shrugged.

“Sergio, huh? Well, it’s nice to meet you—granted our first impressions weren’t exactly positive. And I’d like to hear the story when you’re comfortable to tell it. I can tell mine, but you’re probably going to end up hearing it from someone else if you haven’t already.” The Vault girl seemed a little bit annoyed to say that. “Or have you not heard the local radio broadcast?”

“All at the same time huh? Now I’m really glad I took all this crap with me.” He cricked his neck and started to follow the girl, while holding his brush gun over his shoulder. “So other than Enclave, what are some of the other things we need to watch out for? I know there are a few super mutants and raiders about, they were the first to welcome me here.”

He stopped for a second. “Oh wait, if we’re traveling together we should at least know what to call each other, hm? What’s your name?”

Eve turned her head slightly as she began to explain. “Super Mutants and Raiders pretty much sum up a good bit here in DC. Near the northeast, there’s a big Deathclaw nest out of a pre-war town called Ole Olney. In the west, near Little Lamplight and the remains of Vault 86, you’ll find Yao Guai and a good bit of hostile robots. The robots, Feral Ghouls, and Radscorpions pop up almost everywhere, along with the Talon mercs that are left. And yes, the mercs are out for my blood too so we’ll be fighting them often.

All in all, it’s pretty tame compared to how it was a few years ago. Used to have gigantic Super Mutant Behemoths that would barely die from mini nukes and fire-breathing giant ants.”

After his next question, she looked a little surprised. “Oh! Sorry about that. I’m Eve, used to be a Vaultie before they kicked me out—long story. What about you?”

Sergio was a bit surprised after a warning about her rather bitter foes. “Enclave huh?..” The man had known quite a few former Enclave soldiers back in the Mojave and was a bit curious about how strong they were here, but if he mentioned that he associated with a few of them she’d probably pull a gun on him and he would be right back where he started. “I can handle heavily armored opponents. Back where I come from, it’s something of a commodity so I use high caliber weapons to punch through. I’ve also got a handy SMG with me so versatility is one of my strong points.”

He started to fumble through his things “I’ve got something special for anything that’s really durable, this will make short work of any vertibirds. Aah here it is!” He pulled out a few pieces of his anti material rifle and began to put it together. ” This bad boy fires .50 cal rounds and has a range of about a thousand meters, you should see what this thing can do to death claws. This will probably solve any similar problems.” After a few minutes of tinkering, he successfully assembled the rifle and shouldered it. “Alrighty, where are we headed?” he asked.

“That’s good. We’re not going to be running into them often, but they always show up in force for some reason. I hope you’re ready to face Enclave, Vertibirds, and Deathclaws at the same time.”

With that in mind, the girl began to move. “I think I’ll show you around downtown for a bit. It’s not too far, and it’s a good showcase of both the good and bad of DC.”

The man grunted a bit in acknowledgment. “Ah, well I guess that would explain their less than pleasant dispositions. I know that the loyal Brotherhood types can be rather cold but I never thought one would stoop so low as to mug anyone that they don’t like.” He chuckled a bit. “Maybe it would have been better for both of us if we didn’t let him get away.”

“Clearing out dangerous areas huh, that sounds pretty neat. Reason I’m asking is cause I’m curious and…” Sergio scratched the back of his head a bit as he hesitated, he prided himself as being an lone wolf so asking anyone for help wasn’t easy, especially if it was someone that he barely knew. He groaned a bit as he swallowed his pride. “Alright I’m not gonna bullshit you anymore. To be honest I’m a fish out of water here, I knew the Capital Wasteland would be different from my neck of the woods but I had no idea it would be anything like this so maybe we can help each other out, I set you back with your tasks so how about I accompany you and help you get whatever needs doing resolved faster. If I’m going to make it here, I’ll need your help to get used to the layout of the land and know the people here, know who to shoot and who not to shoot before I start any fights I can’t finish; if you can stand to be in my company I’ll do my best to behave myself and you’ve got another gun on your side and a pair of eyes watching your back.” He shrugged awkwardly a bit, asking for help was something he was not used to.

“It would have been a lot worse to have them all dead. Most of the people that deserted were young, not many true leaders. And in time, ignorance breeds hostility— as you more than likely already know.”

The Vault girl’s eyes widened a small bit when he had asked for help. Back in the day when she was fresh out of the Vault, it was usually her asking for help and advice. But now, someone she assumed was much older than her was asking for her help around the Capital. If she were a more relaxed person, she would be laughing at the strange fact. Instead, she simply smiled and nodded. “Sure thing! I was in your shoes a few years ago, and around here we could use all the help we can get.”

“I’ve gotta warn you, though—you’re going to be running into Enclave sooner or later. And if you’re with me when you find them… Let’s just say that little ditty with the Outcasts is going to look downright cheerful. A good bit of them are dead or missing, but a few squads seemed to make it out of Raven Rock and Adams Air Force Base before they got blown up and show up from time to time. You can handle yourself around Power Armor, so that’s a plus. Just watch out for the Vertibirds.”

After hearing what she had to say, the man couldn’t really stay angry at her. After all, if the situations where reversed he would been far less forgiving with anyone who would blow his cover while stalking a bounty or causing trouble in a town he liked.

“I…Look. Sorry for being such an ass about that. I came here to try to make a living by solving a few problems, not stir up new ones. With that one guy still alive, I’m sure he’ll be rather specific with which one of us was the mediator and the aggressor.” He replied with guilt written on this face, it wasn’t exactly the best choice of comfort words but it was something. A moment later an idea passed through his head and he decided to proceed with it. “So um..What are you doing out here anyway? You strike me as the kind of person who always has something to do.”

“What, that guy?” She couldn’t help but let out a scoff, “Don’t really remember his name, but I sort of know him. He hates my guts. Probably bitching someone’s ear off that I was the one that gave you the guns in the first place. Casdin’s not going to believe him, but that’s not gonna stop him. And lord knows somebody with a stick up their ass about me is gonna start believing him. All in all, it’s probably going to set me back somehow. “

The girl sat down on a worn concrete divider, crossing her arms. “Ah well, what’s done is done. Let’s just hope he’s not the one that takes over the Outcasts when Casdin dies.

She looks up at his question. “Me? I just got done cleaning out a few Super Mutant strongholds further downtown; mostly trying to clear the area so settlers can move in. The few settlements we have are small and unstable, not a good thing since the populations are starting to stabilize and increase. And since the Brotherhood’s trying to do the same with their own population, I volunteered for most of the grunt work.”

Sergio rolled his eyes at the young woman’s response. “Well I certainly hope you see my side of this when I say that between a group of heavily armed and armored soldiers mugging me and a random girl who had just stumbled in, I’d prioritize the former over the latter.” He replied bluntly as he calmly pulled his revolver again and loaded in the shots before putting it away.

“Who’s to say they wouldn’t have done the same thing? If what that one guy said was true that encounter wasn’t a coincidence, they spied on me and planned to either take my things with force, or kill me right then and there and pick my carcass clean; for all we knew they could have backed off as you wanted only to rear their ugly heads again once you were looking the other way. I’m loathe to dismiss your endeavor for peace entirely, but I’m not so lenient with common thugs like them.”

The girl heaves an audible sigh, not really wanting to fight with the one-eyed man. “Look, I’m not happy with them either, but that doesn’t give you or them the right to slaughter each other over something that could have easily been resolved without bloodshed.”

She pauses a moment before pinching the bridge of her nose. “I’m with the east faction Brotherhood. I’ve been trying to ease tensions between Protector Casdin and Elder Lyons for three years, and now I’m going to have to deal with your mess because I was here when it happened. Color me a bit annoyed that you just may as well ruined three years of work.

But I guess you couldn’t tell that by just strolling through here. Just… Try to stay clear of them, alright? I know that’s not going to be easy for you now that you’re probably mad at them, but I’d prefer it if nobody else I’m trying to recruit into helping the Capital gets killed.”

sergiothebastard:

He clenched his fist a bit at her first comment. “Alright now see here, I wasn’t even planning on causing trouble until those Brotherhood rejects showed up and ordered me to fork over my things at gunpoint. I don’t know if any other outcasts are like them or not, but I can guarantee you that those 4 deserved what they got if they were willing to take everything they want from any poor schmuck they see while spitting on him.”

He then walked over to his revolver and picked it up from the floor, he unloaded the bullets from it in front of the girl to show her he wasn’t intending to aim it right in her face; though despite all the repercussions and seeing that she’s pinning him as the bad guy for teaching a bunch of thugs a lesson, that outcome would at least be satisfying. He then holstered his pistol and continued. “You don’t have to tell me twice about how friendly the locals are here, the only people that haven’t shot me on sight are those assholes trying to rob me and you, and your calling me a bad guy just for defending myself from them. I came here because I heard that things are still dangerous here so I figured I could whittle down the raider and mutant population while making some money on the side, but if this is how I’m treated for fighting off common thugs then who knows what would happen if I actually tried to help.”

"It could have been avoided," She spoke plainly, still glaring at him. "I was trying to get you out of that situation without anyone firing a shot, and you completely ignored it."

With the way Sergio was positioned, his body fell face first on the ground upon being released without a hint of grace. Once he pulled his face from the dirt, he noticed the flickering of the girl’s energy weapon; the only thing that could make his situation more humiliating was if she walked behind him and kicked him in the ass. He forced himself up with what dignity he had left and regained his composure. “Me shoot at you, as if I’m in control of this situation. You’re the one pointing the weapon at me.”

He turned to face the woman and his cold stare matched hers, with his arms folded across his chest. “Is that so? Either you’ve got some pretty strong connections here or you’re quite a force to be reckoned with to be threatening me like that, I’m guessing that this is your neck of the woods so I’m not about to dispute that claim. I’d be cautious about pulling that trigger if I were you though; It’ll take more than a plasma bolt to take me down, and I’ve got several friends of my own who wouldn’t let the second person to off me get away with it. Guess that makes us peas in a pod.” He stated bluntly, maintaining a statuesque composure even with the business end of a weapon staring him down for a change.

“What, like how cautious you were with those Outcasts?” She spat out, glowering at him. “Nobody here needs a damn tourist shooting up people that don’t exactly deserve it, got it? We have enough enemies around here.”

The Vault girl holstered her weapon, but still looked wary of the traveler. “If you want to go pick a fight, go walk up to an Enclave encampment or something. Or maybe just take a stroll downtown and get mauled by Super Mutants. But honestly, you’d be better off just hauling ass back to where you came from. ‘Capital really isn’t that friendly of a tourist destination anymore.”

Sergio wasn’t even aware of the girls presence, which made it almost effortless for her to surprise and restrain him. He didn’t get a good look at his captor but one thing was for sure, she was very strong; he tried to get loose but to no avail, his own impressive strength was hindered by the awkward position that he was forced into as she dragged him away from the outcast leader.

Must have been a sight for any one passing by, one minute he was just about to finish off the last of his assailants and now here he was, one of the most rutheless men in the Mojave tied up and hauled away like a bound pig. He ceased all eratic movement and lifted his revolver as high as he could with his finger far away from the trigger before tossing it away. “Alright miss, you win. Now will you release me? All the blood’s rushing to my head and it’s hard to breath in this position.”

The leader was still dazed from Sergio’s knockout blow, the fact that he was but a hair away from death certainly didn’t help. After he got up he zoned out for a moment before shaking out of it, still as astonished as he was when he was staring down the business end of the revolver. He ran to the closest body and retrieved the tags before sprinting as fast as he can away from what he thought was another brainless local towards his other fallen comrades on the bridge.

The blond girl didn’t say a word in response to Sergio, even after he had tossed away his gun—she kept her gaze on the Outcast, following his movements until he was completely out of sight. When she was satisfied that the man could no longer be followed, she released her captive from her grip. The release was quickly followed by a greeting the true Capital way—aiming a Plasma Pistol at the man’s head.

“I really hope you know better than to shoot at me because you’ll be shipped home in a tin can if you do,” Not the most friendly welcome wagon to DC, but after killing an entire squad of people when it could have been avoided right in front of her, she didn’t feel bad about it at all.
